Tan-aw Mindanao: Cagayan de Oro Leg

This is part of a multi-city, 6-day tour we did in Mindanao. I’ll be writing about the cities separately since I know it will be madness if I even attempt to write about all of it in one entry. Should you wish to get the itinerary or more information about the entire trip (travel cost and duration, etc), please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Cagayan de Oro Uplands

Cagayan de Oro is a major city in Northern Mindanao, and can be likened to Manila – busy streets, malls, local businesses, etc. However, it is not all concrete jungle. It boasts of several nature-tripping sites and extreme outdoor activities to satisfy your craving for adventure.

HOW WE GOT THERE:
We flew to Cagayan de Oro via Cebu Pacific Airlines, landing at the Lumbia Airport, which is 10-15 minutes away from the city proper. Take a cab outside the airport; try to insist on using the meter. However, should desperation kick in, do not worry, their fixed rates are not entirely outrageous.
You can get around CDO via taxis, jeepneys or motorelas. I’ve come to realize that in most parts of Northern Mindanao, their term for what we know as tricycles is motorella or “rela” for short. Fare is anywhere from PhP 8 and up.

WHAT TO DO THERE:
White Water Rafting - The main reason why we went to CDO is to try white water rafting. We did the Beginner course with Bugsay, which means paddle in Visayan. The guides are nice and friendly, and we had Val in our raft keeping us entertained in between rapids. We initially though three hours would be too long, and 14 rapids seemed too much. But after the first one, we were eager for more. We were told that the rapids at Cagayan River are world class, especially the ones at the Extreme level. We had so much fun! In fact, we plan to go back for the Advanced level soon.

Bugsay River Rafting Guides are proudly very competent and safe, one of, it not the best from Cagayan de Oro.

There are more sites to explore in Cagayan de Oro like the Mapawa Nature Park and the Macahambus Adventure Park, which we weren't able to see given out limited time. We hope to be back to see more of CDO.

WHAT TO SEE:
We weren't really able to see much of Cagayan de Oro. However, I've heard and read that the St. Agustine Cathedral, the Black Nazarene and the Malasag Gardens are also worth visiting. At one point in the rafting route, one side of the river is Baungon, Bukidnon, which is where the world's biggest flower can be found - the rafflesia or the "kolon busaw". I hope to be able to see these for myself soon.

WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT:
Kagay’anon Restaurant - It is most popular for the ostrich dishes. We tried the Ostrich Salpicao which costs around PhP 400. A bit steep, but worth the try. the meat somewhat looks and tastes like beef. Definitely a winner for me.

Missy Bon Bon - Located at Limketkai Mall, Missy BonBon offers a variety of choices, from meals to breads, dessert and more. Must try their gelato and cheesy sponge. Two thumbs up!

Macki’s Fried (Chicken) of Iligan - It's a sort of hole-in-the-wall place, flocked by mostly seafarers or those studying or applying to be seafarers. All they sell is fried chicken, puso and cola. Eat to you heart, your tummy and your fingers' content!
Square Pizza at BFB

Kambingan - There's always a first time for everything. I can proudly say that in Cagayan de Oro, after a tiring morning of rafting, I tried kambing (goat) meat. I tried adobo and kaldereta, but the best for me would be the kinilaw (which is similar to ceviché, only instead of seafood, this is with meat). Thank you again to the folks of Bugsay for this tummy-smashing experience.

Big Flat Bread - BFB for short, reminds me of Yellow Cab. We went there for late lunch and the pizza, lasagna and pasta was not bad at all. Their four-seasons-with-a-variety-of-fruits cooler is really good too.

Sler's - CDO is also home to Sler's Premium Ham. If you haven't tried it in Manila, then you must try it there. They also offer other items in their fast food branches.

WHAT TO BRING HOME:
Cheding’s Peanuts - Good knick-knacks to munch on. Not greasy at all, making it very addicting.
Missy Bon Bon Cheesy and Mocha Sponge - Bring some home so your loved ones can try this delectably yummy goodie that can serve as snack or dessert.
Vjandep Pastel - If you couldn't bring back from the main source, you can head to Limketkai or Gaisano and grab a few boxes to bring home.

WHERE TO STAY:
We stayed at d'Budgetel, hostel/apartelle conveniently located in the city along Corrales Road, about a 5-minute walk to Gaisano Mall. Nothing fancy, just plain, decent accommodation. Staff were very efficient and the wi-fi connection was good also, though they had quite a difficult time locating our laundry. Overall, I'd say I would definitely stay there again.

Our trip was a few months before Typhoon Sendong. I haven't been back to Cagayan de Oro since the calamity, but are very happy for the support CDO has received. I am also proud that the guides of Bugsay also served as rescue personnel during the Typhoon Sendong Rescue Operations.
